Is it just us or does it feel like the September 2016 has consisted of one big long rumbling update? Barely a weekend has passed were there hasn't been some significant movements in the maps or SERPs. Yet with no official announcement from Google regarding any update, most of the industry experts have been left surmising exactly what has been going on.
Moz reported on the 2nd September HERE about two major updates regarding search results and maps listings and while there have certainly been fluctuations for various SEO’s worldwide for both maps and search results there has been no official announcement as yet.
Having monitored and participated in various “chatter” across the world wide community it really does feel as if Google have left us to work this one out on our own. While it is clear that there has certainly been a maps shake up, the SERP fluctuations have not been as clear cut. Some experts believe that the latest update could be focused on “content cannibalization”, which occurs when Google sees various pages across a website that appear to target the same keywords and therefore does now know which one to rank highest. This normally results in all pages being ranked much lower than having one authoritative post or page targeted solely at that keyword(s).
Obviously these ongoing movements could just be the positions settling down as a result of a Google dance or a long drawn out roll out occuring.
As ever we will continue to monitor the SERPs and keep you all posted with any updates we have on the current situation and any other developments we come across.
